(Group project)
Explanation
You present the successive iterations of your creative process, and the connections between them, of your methodically substantiated, iterative design and development process.
In this Iterative design example, I will show my iterations for the group project cypher.
Action
Storyboard
In class, we were told that making a storyboard was a very effective way to find out how you want to show a story. So, I started drawing the first version of a storyboard.
This version of the storyboard got presented in class and I received the feedback that I should add text to the board to make it more complete. So, that's what I did.
I wrote the text for what was happening in the text fields, so it was clear what was meant to happen.
After this, I decided to create a better version of this board using colors and images. The background image I used is from Pinterest, and the people in the pictures are generated from ChatGPT and Bing Image Creator.
In the version above, you can see what the first storyboard wants to show better.
I showed/explained this board to some students for feedback, and the feedback I received was that they preferred the room I chose over the other two storyboards we had in the group.
Poster iterations
For the poster presentation, we had to create posters showing off our concept.
We (the group) all started making our versions.
I started by looking at my Pinterest board.
From here on, I just started trying different things.
In the GIF above, you can see the first few versions I made.
After finding one that I saw potential in, I continued iterating with that one.
In the video above, you can see the iterations I made on that poster.
In the image above, you can see the last version I made before asking for feedback.
In the image above, you can see the feedback. The feedback I got was very positive, my poster was liked and eye-catching. I also got some suggestions to improve my poster even more. I included all these points in my next poster.
This was my final poster.
It was not chosen to be the final poster, though.
In the image above, you can see the final poster.
This poster contains a lot of elements I made/found/wrote, including the Colosseum image, the logo, the text sections, and the fonts.
There are also some 'iterations' made on the test filming day.
The first changes we made were taping the ground for the camera.
In the image above, you can see the squares that we taped off for the wheels of the camera. I decided to add these squares to the floor because when I was filming, at first, I just moved the camera to the side, freestyle. With these squares, I had guidelines for where I needed to go. The problem with this was that I needed to look at the ground and at the rappers at the same time, so to fix this issue, one of my team members (Kyra) would hold me and move me in the right direction so I could keep looking at the rappers and if they were in frame.
The next iteration we made on this was removing the squares and making crosses in the middle of the camera on the floor. We did this because when you move the camera around, the wheels also move, and when you then move the camera back, the wheels are in a completely different position. So, by making the cross in the middle, we can keep the correct positions.
Another iteration we made was with the lighting.
We had two lighting boxes, these boxes are supposed to simulate the fire that's supposed the be in front of the rappers.
At first, we put the boxes on the sides at the same brightness.
Then we decided to made one box lighter because we thought that would look more realistic with the lighting in the background.
This was, however, not very sensible because the torches/ the fires were the same. Also the lights turned out to be too bright so we changes them again.
Now both lighting boxes are at a dim of 50.
The last iteration we made on the testing day was changing how many people were in frame at the same time. We first got told that there were going to be 8 rappers present for the video, so we made a rotation for the rappers because the screen was not big enough to have 8 people in front of it at the same time. On the test day, however, we found out that there were only going to be 5 rappers. So we had to change how we wanted to do things.
We first tried to keep to the same thing that we had thought of in the storyboard, but the rappers did not understand this very well. They also did not like the fact that not all of them were on screen. So one of the rappers suggested testing if it was possible to show them all on screen. We tested this and found out that this was now possible because they were with less. So we adapted and left our original idea behind.
Reflection
Looking back on the poster, I had some struggles with starting up the process, having a lot of failed attempts in the beginning. Regardless of this, after I created something I was satisfied with, and received the feedback that what I had made was really good, I felt better about the process.
Regarding the storyboard, I feel that I did a decent job. I made quite a few different versions. Starting with a paper version and from there on working my way up to a more professionally acceptable version.
Looking back on the testing day, I think that it was very useful that we had one. We got to test out everything and see how it worked when we were actually filming. So we found out a bunch of new things that we had to adapt to. Overall, the day went very well on our side. The things that did not go well mostly came from the rappers' side, because they were unprepared, even though we told them to be weeks in advance. On the real filming day, the test day also proved to be helpful because we were prepared a lot faster.
